DIY JOBS / SPARK PLUGS

Change Your Own Spark Plugs in the Bay Area

Misfire, rough idle, or just due? Plugs are the cheapest tune-up you can do yourself. Some engines take 30 minutes. Some V6s make you pull the intake. Either way, we’ve got the tools and the bench space.

FAQ

Do I need a lift for spark plugs?

Not always. Most plugs are up top. But you get the bay, the tools, bench space, and good light, and some engines are easier to reach from below.

My engine needs the intake pulled. Is that a problem?

Nope. Book more time, use the bench to keep parts in order, and bring a new intake gasket if your car calls for one.

Should I swap the coils too?

If they’re old or you’ve got a misfire, a lot of people do both at once. Your call. The coil pullers are here either way.

How tight do the plugs go?

To your car’s torque spec. Start them by hand, then use a torque wrench. Stripped threads in an aluminum head turn a cheap job into an expensive one.
